Thousand Islands

Onrust & Kelor

Onrust and Kelor Islands are part of the Thousand Islands, islands that are situated just off the coast of Jakarta. The two islands are away from the pollution and hustle bustle of the metropolitan. It’s like being in a different world, yet it is in fact still close to Jakarta.

With Onrust, I like how the trees are different to the trees that I normally see in Jakarta. There is the ruins of the old hospital on the island. The only building that is intact is the doctor’s house.

Kelor, strangely, has a small population of cats. I don’t know how they got there, possibly because some irresponsible people left them there. Unfortunately, Kelor will become extinct in possibly less than a century. The water level keeps rising and will submerge the small island in not so distant future. We will be losing this valuable a historical site.

Fort Martello

Pulau Seribu - Kelor | Fort Martello

[EN] Now I know the name of the fort on Pulau Kelor: Martello. There were three of Forts Martello, the other two were on Pulau Bidadari and Pulau Onrust. The remains on Pulau Bidadari is only half of the original structure. The eruption of Krakatau created a tidal wave that destroyed half of the fort in Pulau Bidadari. The one on Pulau Onrust is completely gone. Unfortunately, it was destroyed as it was looted in 1960s.

Pulau Seribu - Kelor | The Old Dutch Fort Ruins

[EN] This is the sight as seen from a point close to the ruins. Nearby there is the artistic old tree, with the blue sky, the sea and the horizon at the background. Notice some people standing a bit further away and notice also the high rise buildings on the shore of Jakarta.

Approaching Kelor

Pulau Seribu - Kelor | Approaching the Island

[EN] Pulau Kelor is one of the group of islands known as Pulau Seribu or Thousand Islands. The nearest group of islands of Pulau Seribu to Jakarta consist of four islands. Pulau Kelor being one of them and Pulau Bidadari is the largest and it has been made into a resort. The other two are Pulau Onrust and Pulau Cipir.

The one in the photo is Pulau Kelor. As you approach Kelor, you will see the old ruin of a Dutch fort that was used to defend the near-by islands and Jakarta from foreign invaders from the sea like the British, Spanish and the Portuguese. The island is small, but it has a beautiful white sand beach. The air is so fresh as you can see the blue sky, something that you don’t see when you’re in Jakarta.

As the island is so small, there is no one living on it, but strangely, there are cats living on the small island. Somehow, they managed to survive eating fish. I don’t know how they catch the fish though.

When you’re in Jakarta, you should spare your time to come to Pulau Seribu, stay at Pulau Bidadari, and take a boat to land on Pulau Kelor. Enjoy the fresh sea air and the serenity of being on a secluded island. One downside about the island is that it is littered with a lot of plastic from bottles and snack wrappings. Still, you can enjoy the view 360 degrees as you take your 5 minute walk along the shores of Pulau Kelor.
