Statue of Mercurius, Museum Fatahillah, Kota Tua (Old Town), Jakarta

21 April 2011

[EN] This statue is located in the inner courtyard of Museum Fatahillah, Kota Tua (Old Town), Jakarta. I learned from Irina that the statue is Mercurius, God of Trade. There is a similar statue at Moscow Trade Center. Both statues are standing on a ball, with wings protruding from the ankles, holding a similar kind of short staff and wearing a hat with wings. I wonder if there are any other statues of Mercurius in other parts of the world?

It is Mercurius, the god of trade. I recognized him because we have the exact copy near the building of Moscow trade center (here: http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/kudima177ru/view/450422/?page=48

This is an interesting photo. I wonder why the same statue is in Jakarta and Moscow. Maybe another blogger will answer.
